Co-operation, Domination and some History

22 05 2010

By Nicole

Personally, I don’t know how Round 4 will turn out. It seems like anyone’s game now (but I believe that’s the magic of the manga artist)! However, it seems that there are some metaphors and thoughts we can draw from all the rounds so far.

In Round 4, it looks like it is a completely new game, but really, I believe that this round is a culmination of events that has occurred so far.

In this manga, we notice a pattern emerging. The idea of “voting” or a so-called democracy is invoked several times in the Liar Game manga.

Basically, the ideas of “Co-operation” and “Domination”.

Why I Love Akiyama x Nao

Fukunaga and Fairness!

27 08 2009

Because I spend way too much time thinking about Liar Game, and thinking leads to crack theories.

For example: Early on, Fukunaga plays the part of the conniving trickster. You know, the one who will stab others in the back to make money. The cheater. The one who doesn’t care about right or wrong as long as they come out ahead.

Or so it seems.

Could it be that Fukunaga is actually Liar Game’s best example of someone who cares about what is ‘fair’?

*sigh* Language issues + Fukunaga

27 08 2009

Tons of disclaimers:

1. If you’re tired of the is Fukunaga a boy or a girl debate…this is not your post. I’ll have something up tomorrow, which will deal with Fukunaga entirely outside of gender issues. Promise.

2.I am in no way claiming to be an expert on transgender issues, particularly in Japan.

3.This is not a post making an argument that Fukunaga is a boy/girl/squid/rock, it’s simply clarifying the Japanese in places.

4. Once this post is done. I’m shutting up about this issue, except to answer language/translation issues that someone might ask in the comments. Also a promise.

Fukunaga, Revisited

25 08 2009

Hoo boy…Chapter 83…

a.k.a. The chapter where everything changes. Yeah, it’s funny, but it’s also huge in what it’s promising, and what’s happening with the characters. Everyone got a bit more depth to them, and if one thing is certain, the next rounds are going to deviate from the first few rounds where Fukunaga was Evil and Tricky, Nao was Stupid and Naive, and Akiyama was Cool and Awesome. (Okay, I’m sure Akiyama will still be cool and awesome, but he’s starting to show some of his stress.).

So…hope people don’t mind, but there’s going to be a lot of posts coming up. Two for Fukunaga, two for Akiyama…and at least one for Nao. Plus predictions for what’s going to happen in future Rounds, even after the one currently going on.

Overkill? Probably.

But 83 is HUGE. Probably one of the most pivotal chapters in Liar Game. You know because of the caps.

So…on to the thing this chapter that EVERYONE is talking about:

Italian Unification

4 05 2009

You might be wondering what Italian Unification has to do with Liar Game, but just put up with me a little while and you’ll see where I’m going with this.  So, for a quick European History 101–

Possible Plot Twists of Liar Game

20 04 2009

…A.K.A “If Liar Game were a Shoujo Manga”.
Pure idiocy & some crudeness.  A lot of them came from emails between Onicchi and me. 🙂

Translation Pitfalls

17 04 2009

For people who’ve looked at the Chapter Names or at Fukunaga’s 10 questions, and then looked at Null’s version, you’ve probably noticed that there are a ton of significant translation differences, not just in the exact wording of things, but in meaning as well.

Partly, this is my own lack of Japanese skills. I admit, I look up most words in either my Kanji dictionary or the Online Dictionary, and tend to take things as literally as possible.  I don’t know the experience of other translators, but my first assumption is always that they have a better idea of what they’re doing, if only by benefit of experience.

Translation and language geekery coming up. Oh, and an explanation about a “New Half.” =D

Spoiling Questions for the Russian Roulette Game

7 04 2009

[[ETA: Since many of the comments are written in ROT-13, you can go here to read and write them.]]

Because I think it would be fun, and totally devious to mess with people instead of delivering actual spoilers. So let’s have some extremely leading questions below the cut, and see who can guess what happens during the Russian Roulette Game?

10 Questions for Fukunaga

30 03 2009

This is a really bad translation on my part, but essentially, it’s the front page of one of the chapters in Vol 7, in which Shinobu Kaitani asks Fukunaga some questions that I’m sure a lot of readers would like to know, and Fukunaga…sort of answers them.
